Alex Kreger

Pianist, Composer, Scholar




Alex Kreger is a pianist, composer, and scholar. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the humanities at the University of Pennsylvania, and he holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies (2023) from the University of Texas at Austin. He studied piano and composition at Michigan State University (B.M. 2012) and ethnomusicology at UT-Austin (M.M. 2016), and has studied privately with Jen Shyu, Sally Sargent, and Teresa Dybvig. As a pianist, he has performed in Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and the U.S. with saxophonist Mette Henriette and his quartet Moyindau, whose self-titled album was released by the co-operative Catalytic Sound. He also performs on the Turkish lute saz in ritual and concert settings with Dertli Divani, Mansur Bildik, and other Turkish musicians. In 2021, he recorded the original song cycle Mana based on text by sociologist Emile Durkheim with Ingrid Laubrock, Dan Weiss, and Kamala Sankaram.
